Subeta is a PG-13 online virtual-pet game, which was created by Keith Kurson and publicly opened on September 27th 2003[1], though there was an old version of the online game in existence pre-September 2003 an apparent server reset meant loss of data. Membership is free, and Subeta imposes a strict one account per-person limit, this is to maintain fairness in the game. Beyond the website, there has been a small amount of merchandise such as the Kumos Plushie, which was moderately successful. Subeta's art has an exceptionally reputation among the virtual-pet site community.
In gameplay a user (Subetan) is allowed to take care of 1-10 of 54 species which are usually just referred to as pets, though they are sometimes called Subetapets. Caring for pets (feeding, entertaining, training), exploring Subeta, using Subetapoints (sP); the currency of Subeta, which are earned through playing games, restocking, and various other activities are available in gameplay. There is also a forum, trade center, innovative user profiles, art gallery and thousands of items and things to collect.
Subeta employs a voluntary group of staff who receive small amounts of pay including; Moderators (as well as Minimods, Programmers, Administrators, User Administrators and Artists, any user may become a staff member. The site has been hit with many controversies including user favoritism, references to homosexuality, depression, bestiality and unnecessary violence, despite this, Subeta has many members from varying religions and societies.
Environment
- Main Article: List of Subetan Worlds
The game takes place on The Lands of Subeta, with its orbiting moon Atebus. The central area is Centropolis, which is described as "The center of all Subeta's commerce!" There are also other various areas on Subeta's world map: The Fair Grounds(Carnival/game), Riverside Valley, Veta Lake, Delphi Beach, ? Island, The Darkside, Shadowglen Graveyard, Sacred Lands and the Arctic Frost.
There are only 4 sub-areas, all of which are present on Atebus, known as Ziara City, Pińa Park, Galaxan Wastelands and Coda Caves, the latter two are currently unavailable.
In 2005 as part of a plot, Delphi Beach was completely flooded by a tsunami.
The ? island can only be accessed if one completes the Uncharted Land Map, on the island is Merana, who asks you to complete quests, and as a reward your pet will be changed to a Hydrus color.
Games
- Main Article: Games
Quests
As of January 2006, there are 15 Quest games at Subeta, in which a player must retrieve certain items for a non-player character in exchange for an award, usually Subetapoints and items. With the exception of the Oracle Quests, a user may do a quest whenever they like, however to play Saggitarius's Quest a user must have 750,000 Subetapoints, Amy's Quests require that you have less than 500,000 sP.
Community
Subeta has a vast community in which users can contact each other by private sMail (short for Subeta Mail) or publicly on the forums. Also, there is a shoutbox on the sidebar which is a text-based chatroom. Users can also post comments to each other on their User Profiles. There are also other popular community sections at Subeta.
Art Gallery
Users who enjoy showing others their art can do so in the Art Gallery, where Digital Art, Traditional Artwork, Photography, Pixel Art, Graphics and Scraps/Sketches can be uploaded. Other users can comment on artwork, and in future high quality artwork will be viewable in a featured images section, recently uploaded images are displayed in a newest images section. Each user has their own art gallery, this lists thumbnails of each artwork a user has uploaded.
Cults
Members with similar interests can create or join cults, which usually have one theme, it is also very common for fansites to have a cult for its users, each can be a member of only one cult, and cannot preview other cults while a member. Each cult has its own forum, which can have as many boards as desired. Cults can also have as many pages as desired, and thus some cults may be viewed as a website, rather than a simple member group. Each cult also has two vaults, one for items, and the other for Subetapoints, the amount of points in a vault as well as the number of members in a cult are contributing factors as to where the cult will be advertised on the cults directory. Cults can have as many moderators and administrators as necessary, the cults administration panel allows for an administrator to give its members a range of special permissions.
The cults have come under much criticism for their long history of having glitches in the system, this has included certain options and functions within cults not working, users having the ability to delete a cult, forums being completely useless, page links not working and long downtime between "remakes" of the cults. Using the word "cults" to describe member groups on a virtual-pet site has angered some members because of the association of the word with the occult, however, cult has many common meanings one which best describes Subeta's cults: " a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc."[2]
Forums
The forums are extremely popular with Subeta members, and most users have made a few posts in the forum at some stage of their time at Subeta. One major reason why Subeta is PG-13 is because the forums (along with the rest of the site) allow adult discussion, which is also another reason why Subeta is more popular with people 13 years or older. The most controversial of all boards is the Debate board, where current affairs, political, religious, psychological and sexuality related topics are discussed. Behavior by members is expected to be mature, swearing is not allowed, neither is off-topic discussion, spam or abbreviating words such as please to plz. Members who have a Gold Account have access to a special Gold Account users only board.
Each member has their own human avatar (also known as user avatar) whose hair style, skin color and gender can be chosen. Avatars can be dressed in any Clothing of their choice. Human avatars display next to each post a user makes, and will possibly be displayed on other sections of the site in future, human avatars replaced Secret avatars, though if a user uploaded their own avatar it is still visible on other areas of the site, such as user profiles and news comments.
Subeta Code (sometimes referred to as sCode) a HTML replacement, can be used to bold text, display images, italicize text, change font size and more. Subeta Code is also used for user signatures, which display below each post, and can include anything which Subeta Code will allow. Subeta Code is largely a filter, HTML is completely disabled, so that malicious codes can be blocked, though such filters aren't fool-proof. Subeta Code is also more dynamic than using HTML, because special templates, such as [itemname=Item Name Here] will display an image of any item.
sMail
Subeta Mail (otherwise known as sMail) is a private messaging system available to all Subeta members, which is much the same as regular e-mail, except that each message is limited to 800 characters, and html is not allowed. If a user doesn't want to be contacted by a certain user, they can block them using a block list, users can also chose to receive messages from everyone, friends only, or no-one by changing their preferences.
Though Subeta Mail is private messaging, it is still monitored by Subeta staff to make sure there is no illegal activity, or other form of unacceptable behavior. Users can help out by reporting inappropriate messages, as it is highly unlikely that staff will monitor every message.
Users may have up to 75 messages in their Inbox, and store an additional 75 messages in other folders. All mail is cleared from Subeta's database, usually annually. A "one mail per-minute" limit is currently in place.
Oekaki
Subeta has 3 Oekaki's: the Normal Subeta Oekaki which anybody can join, and is for Subeta-related art only, the Advanced Subeta Oekaki takes applications for membership and only approves applicants who can draw Subeta-related art of a high quality, the Miscellaneous Oekaki has no limitations and members can draw whatever they like. Users have drawn literally tens of thousands of images in Subeta's Oekaki's, and competitions organized by staff are quite common.
Game Statistics
As of December 17th 2006; there are 338,724,522 total pageviews. 26,668,698,188 total Subetapoints in circulation and 123,572 users.
